This site is located in Riombasa, around 30 minutes from Kisii town in Western Kenya. When we were first introduced to this site on our trip in January 2014, it set the goal for what we had to design for. This is because, of the shallow well sites we are working with, this one is by far the deepest and therefore became the benchmark for the lift that the Majipump would need to be able to produce. The water table here can be up to 50 feet below the surface, which presented quite a challenge in designing a low energy solar powered pump that can achieve that kind of lift. We are excited that the latest Majipumps can comfortably pump that high and higher while not significantly losing flow rate.
This site has both a greenhouse, as well as a fish pond, which has made it a good candidate for several of our Majipump projects. The submersible solar powered well pump we have installed can pump water directly from the well to the tank feeding the greenhouse’s drip irrigation system. This is a simple replacement for all the manual labor that is required without a pump present. This will also be a pilot location for our fish pond MajiPumps going forward.
