The young engineers initiative (YEI) encapsulates the vision of Project SPLASH: we’re using technology and innovation to help meet basic human needs, while promoting sustainability and internal development. YEI teaches the fundamental engineering skills required to design and build solutions for technological challenges. By equipping students with skills such as engineering drawing, CAD modeling, and 3D printing, YEI aims to inspire and empower the next generation of innovators. Schools with no current access to computers will be provided with solar powered laptops, helping students seize opportunities enabled by technological literacy. All schools in the program will also be provided with a custom-designed 3D printer for manufacturing prototypes. Our ultimate goal is to get students involved in solar technology projects upon completion of YEI coursework, so they can immediately apply the engineering skills they learn. The lesson plans for YEI are currently being developed in a collaborative effort with the University of Illinois, and we look forward to implementing the program in classrooms starting in the summer of 2016.
